JANUARY 2008 - EAT, PRAY, LOVE
We’ll meet at the home of Judy Borlase on Saturday, January
12, at 10:00 a.m. Our January selection is Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth
Gilbert. Following a divorce and crushing depression, Gilbert flees
New York and seeks refuge in pleasure in Italy, devotion in India,
and finally, in Bali, a balance between worldy enjoyment and divine
transcendence.
DECEMBER 2007 - DINNER WITH A PERFECT
STRANGER
We’ll meet at the home of Kathy DeMerit-Souther on Sunday,
December 16, at 2:00 p.m. for High Tea. Our December selection
is David Gregory’s "Dinner with a Perfect Stranger". Cynical
Nick, convinced his friends are pulling a prank, accepts an invitation
to dine with Jesus of Nazareth. “Suspend your disbelief,
and proceed as if I am Jesus,” says his dinner companion.
What unfolds is a fascinating conversation covering a multitude
of topics. One hundred pages short, the book is a perfect read
for the holiday season.
OCTOBER 2007 - SUZANNE WOODS FISHER
Early in October, we had a visit from author Suzanne Woods Fisher.
A regular contributor to Christian Parenting Today, she has just
published her first novel, Copper Star, this past summer. Suzanne
gave us a peek into the world of publishing, and the competition
an author faces trying to get published.
The novel is set during WWII. Main character Louisa is working
with Dietrich Bonhoffer. However, when the danger becomes too great,
she escapes Nazi Germany to wait out the war in a copper mining
town (based on Bisbee, AZ). Louisa lives with a minister and his
family who have a hearing-impaired son. Louisa contacts the John
Tracy Clinic in Southern California. Suzanne was anxious to tell
about this real place started by Spencer Tracy’s wife, Louise.
“When you think of the woman in Spencer Tracy’s life;
everyone thinks--Katherine Hepburn”, stated Suzanne. She
wanted to recognize Louise Spencer’s work in starting this
clinic named for her son, John Tracy. Ironically, John Tracy died
the day Suzanne’s book was released. The clinic has endorsed
Copper Star. The sequel, Copper Fire, is due out in 2008.
A raiser of Guide Dog puppies, Suzanne has a puppy in the new
novel (I’ll bet this dog ends up making the grade as a guide
dog). Guide Dogs for the Blind is endorsing Copper Fire.
We were given a sneak preview into Copper Fire--Louisa does return
to Germany after the war ends.
Louisa is a rotten cook, but her one claim to fame is her recipe
for “Forgiving Cake.” It always turns out--hence the
name. Suzanne brought a Forgiving Cake with her. Here’s the
recipe.
FORGIVING CAKE
4 cups diced/peeled Granny Smith apples
1 cup sugar
2 large slightly beaten eggs
1/2 cup corn oil
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped walnuts (from the bell choirs’ nut sales?!)
Toss apples and sugar. Whisk eggs, oil and vanilla together,
stir into apples. Add flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon
to the apple mixture, stir until combined. Fold in walnuts
and raisins.
For Muffins: bake in muffin tins at 325o for
25-30 minutes.
For Bundt cake: Bake at 325o for 45-50 minutes (check frequently
the last 15 minutes to prevent over-baking).
Optional: drizzle with icing. |
