Faith & Justice Immersion Program Sacred Heart Community Service in San Jose
When: Friday, May 16, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Who: Up to 30 PCLG elders, deacons, and members
Where: Sacred Heart Community Service’s facility at 1381 S. First Street, San Jose
What: An all-day experience of serving the less privileged in our community and reflecting on the experience in light of the gospel and our Christian faith.
Throughout the gospels, Jesus demonstrates love of neighbor through acts of compassion toward those in need. In doing so, Jesus invited us to share in his work and to “draw near and see.” The Faith & Justice Immersion Program offers the opportunity to draw near to our neighbors,speci fically those who are systematically disregarded by the larger society, and to actually meet the poor face-to-face as a brother and sister.
Sacred Heart has developed a series of integrated services that together are available to community members.They provide the infrastructure and systems that will enable concerned community organizations to take that first step toward meeting the needs of our impoverished neighbors.These services include a Pantry Program, Clothes Closet, Donation Station, Housing Office, and Welcome Center.
Through the course of the day, Faith &Justice Immersion Program participants will rotate through at least two of programs ,and all will have the opportunity to interact directly with customers. We will discuss the nature of poverty in Santa Clara County and some of the reasons why people end up in poverty in a wealthy valley like ours.
At the close of the program, the group will reflect on the day, sharing personal experiences and reading some scripture related to poverty. We will examine the causes of poverty and take the time to honestly consider our role in the situation; might we inadvertently be contributing to the injustice of poverty? If so,what is the appropriate response? This encounter opens the door to discussing what more can be done.
