From the "Book of Order" (pg 48):
The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.
It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord’s Supper.
Deacons visit members in their homes, nursing homes, and in the hospital, keeping them in touch with the church. Phone calls are made and cards or notes are sent to people who are ill or unable to attend church. When our Deacons visit people, lives are touched and in this way they can know the church is there and praying for them.
- They serve home communion to those otherwise unable to partake in worship.
- They can give confidential financial assistance to those with short term identifiable needs, from a fund donated by church members and friends.
- They deliver meals and arrange for rides; call on those in hospitals with prayer shawls; relieve friends and families waiting on a loved one undergoing surgery, with a basket of snacks, puzzles or other items.
CARING MINISTRIES (to email the Caring Ministries, click This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
Caring Ministries is comprised of those called to support the Deacons with materials and resources (many members of Caring Ministries are also Deacons). The goods they create and the services they provide are their own ministries to Christ in the name of PCLG. We have many wonderful volunteers involved in many ministries, and opportunities always exist for more volunteers to participate.
- They are the Greeters who welcome you to Worship at every service.
- They are the members of our Prayer Chain (members of the congregation who volunteer to pray for those who have prayer requests).
- They knit the prayer shawls delivered by Deacons to the ill, the injured or those in hospital or pain.
- They are the volunteer drivers who give rides to church, doctor, hospital, shopping or wherever, for those who have problems getting around.
- They cook the meals delivered by volunteers for those who need assistance or just respite and the comfort of a meal from a friend.
