We are thrilled to announce that this summer PCLG will present the northern California premiere of Disney’s Geppetto & Son.
Take the story of Pinocchio and turn it on its head: tell it from the perspective of the puppet’s exasperated parent, throw in a Blue Fairy with attitude, pepper it with songs from Grammy, Tony, and Oscar-winning composer, Stephen Schwartz (the genius behind stage hits Godspell, Pippin, and Wicked not to mention Disney and DreamWorks animated features Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Prince of Egypt), mix with a liberal assortment of quirky characters and you have a show that’s as much to perform as it is to see.
You know the story: a wooden puppet who aspires to become a real boy faces lessons about telling the truth and has many adventures, including being swallowed by a whale! Geppetto & Son takes the story a few steps further. Geppetto has some lessons of his own to learn, but by the end of the show father and son have managed to stumble into a caring, accepting relationship.
Geppetto & Son has some wonderful roles for adults (Geppetto, the Blue Fairy, Stromboli, and others), and for teens and children (Pinocchio, the Ringleader, and MANY more). In fact, it was written so that almost limitless numbers of young people can be in the cast! It features Stephen Schwartz’s most accessible score since Godspell as well as the classic songs When You Wish Upon a Star and I’ve Got No Strings from the original Disney film.
Audition Information:
Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 8, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and on Tuesday, May 11, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, 16575 Shannon Road, Los Gatos (near Los Gatos Blvd and Blossom Hill Rd). Auditionees need attend only one session.
Please come prepared to sing one of the audition songs (“I’ve Got No Strings” and “When You Wish Upon a Star”), learn one of the dance numbers from the show, and to do a cold reading. The purpose of our auditions is NOT to find out if you’re “good enough”—it’s to find out where you fit best. We’ll teach the songs at the audition sessions, but—if you want to show us how excited you are about the show—you’ll learn them ahead of time. Both songs are available on Disney Pinocchio CDs.
Important note:
The Shoestring Theatre Company’s summer program involves the interaction of adults, teens, and children both on-and-off-stage. For this reason, all first-time adult participants in the program must complete a two-hour child safety training program offered by the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos. The training will be given on the morning of Saturday, May 15 and on the afternoon of Sunday, May 16 (choose one date). This includes all performers who will be 18 years of age or older as of June 1, 2010, and both parents of all juvenile performers. Failure to complete this training will result in being dropped from the cast.
Our program is highly dependent on the offstage participation of our parent volunteers. We don’t charge a participation fee, but we do require that the parents of juvenile performers put in a liberal amount of time performing support tasks like rehearsal or green room supervision, set construction, publicity, stage crew, etc. Volunteer opportunities will be available at auditions and at the required all-parents meeting on May 19 at 7:30 p.m. |
