The idea to provide a layette program for needy families originated with Sophia Rowland in 1985. After her death in 1989, Rebekah Circle continued the project in memory of Sophia, who was a member of that circle. Today we make up eight layettes each month to be distributed by the Public Health Nurses' Association. Each layette contains undershirts, receiving blankets, onesies, and bib rompers. Handmade blankets and quilts are added when available.
From time to time, Rebekah Circle sponsors a Sophia's Layette work day. Those who participate bring their portable sewing machines, pins and other sewing accessories and join in the work and fun of making the layettes. The fellowship is great too!
If you would like to have more information about the Sophia's Layette program contact Norma Rose or Gina Bommarito.
Thanks for a Successful Baby Shower for SOPHIA’S LAYETTE
Kudos to all who made our Sophia’s
Layette Baby Shower on Mother’s Day
such a success. We collected over 100
pieces of clothing along with over $600
to help purchase items for the layettes.
Each month we pack 30 baby blankets of
different weights, 20 “onesies”, 20 gowns or “jamakins”,
10 outfits, 10 hats, 10 sweaters, 10 pairs of socks or
booties, 10 bibs, 10 books, and 10 toys. Thanks to all
who participated.
NOTE: Sophia’s Layette will be holding a work day on
Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Come help
us hem blankets, quilts, and other fun stuff. If you own a
sewing machine, please bring it.
