The
Mission Committee of PCLG is responsible for the church's mission
budget. In addition, there are many mission efforts carried on by
other
organizations in the church. These organizations include Presbyterian Women,
Children’s
Ministry, Youth Ministry,
Women on
Wednesday, Covenant
Groups, and Fellowship
Groups.
The
Mission Committee also encourages and supports participation in (and
donations to) missions such as Food
for the Hungry, Crop
Hunger Walk, Flying
Doctors, Heifer International, Family
Giving Tree/Adopt a
Family, and volunteer service in local,
national, and international organizations.
The
Mission Committee also makes decisions on where to spend the portion
of the annual Peace Offering funds that remains with the church. Our
most recent decisions were made at the request of our active Mission
Committee member, Robin Wagar, whose death has saddened our committee.
Her passionate and tireless devotion to Palestine will
long be remembered. We gave $250 to the Israeli
Committee against House Demolitions (which is rebuilding
homes of Palestinians) and $150 to B’Tselem,
the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights (for their project
distributing cameras
to residents to document resettlements and other human rights
violations).
The total Mission
Committee budget
for 2009 is $51,000, unchanged in recent years. Almost half of this
budget goes to the world-wide missions of the General Assembly, Synod of the Pacific, and Presbytery of San Jose, to use
as these organizations wish. In addition, we
directly support several world-wide
organizations and missionaries.
Smaller portions of our budget support missions to Mexico and local area missions. Finally, we
reserve a portion of our budget for special
projects: unforeseen and special needs during the year.
Members of the
Mission Committee are: Martha Beattie and
Sue Coates, Mission Elders; Joyce Byers, Colleen Callaghan, Hendrika
Harris, Julie Lasher, Sam Laub, Elsie Matt, Doris Prince, Sasha
Scott, Don Wolf, and Anita Wolf.
